Vacations to Kibuye, Rwanda
One of Rwanda's most beautiful cities, Kibuye, which surrounds Lake Kivu, is beloved by many for its superlative scenery and mellow feel. Setting foot in the city, you can hardly believe this charming location was once the setting for genocide. In fact, this area experienced the largest number of Tutsi murders anywhere in Rwanda. Just 25 kilometers from Kibuye, Bisesero Genocide Memorial is set amongst breathtaking surroundings, and gives people the opportunity to remember and pay tribute to over 50,000 people who were cruelly slain here.
Thankfully, modern-day Kibuye is as far removed from those war-torn days as you could imagine. One of the highlights of any visit has to be a boat trip around Lake Kivu. The most popular journey takes in six forested islands, including the Chapeau de Napoleon, which is home to thousands of birds. Hiking and biking are also popular pastimes in and around Kibuye; the city is a major stop on the Congo-Nile Trail, which extends from Gisenyi to Kamembe.
If you're looking for authentic goods, food and drink as souvenirs of your stay, the daily market in the centre is the perfect opportunity to peruse the local fare. Popular dishes to try in Kibuye's bars and hotels include goat brochettes.
Les Chutes de Ndaba is a gorgeous 100-meter high waterfall, only 25 kilometers from Kibuye. And it's one of its most beautiful attractions. Local youngsters will regale you with information about the natural wonder, and the valley below.
Whether you're interested in Rwanda's turbulent history, or just want to escape modern life for a while and take it easy, Kibuye is the perfect place to chill out for a while on your African adventures.
