Holidays to Ruhengeri, Rwanda

Located in an area boasting some of the most incredible landscapes and primates on the planet, a trip to Ruhengeri is essential if you’re keen to throw yourself head-first into the beautiful and mysterious wilds of Rwandan forests.

This city in northwestern Rwanda (also known as Musanze) is the perfect staging post, thanks to its location on the edge of the Volcanoes National Park. This park is home to five of the eight volcanoes in the Virunga Mountain range, and a hike up peaks such as Mount Bisoke is an ideal opportunity to take in the sheer spectacle. You can also see the area’s rich array of waterbirds by taking to the water on a lake cruise on either nearby Lake Ruhondo or Burerea.

However, there's more to this area than simply jaw-dropping landscapes. The region is arguably best known for being home to the incredible and rare mountain gorillas. A trek to see these amazing animals is a must and gives you a chance to follow in the footsteps of the legendary naturalist Dian Fossey, whose work with the local wildlife was immortalised in the book, and Oscar-nominated film, 'Gorillas in the Mist'. In order to track the gorillas you will need to be at the headquarters of Volcanoes National Park at 7am on the day of your trek, therefore staying in Ruhengeri is a much more sensible option than leaving from Kigali at the crack of dawn. Be sure to book your gorilla permits well in advance as space is limited and books up quickly.

If you're an outdoor lover, camping overnight in the Ruhengeri region with an expert guide is an incredible experience. A backdrop of the mountains and volcanoes allows visitors to enjoy truly spectacular views and relax after a day of exploring.

With its stunning scenery and magnificent landscape, a trip to Ruhengeri and the surrounding area is undoubtedly one of the great experiences that the beautiful continent of Africa has to offer.
