Holidays to Hermanus, South Africa
Life flows a little slower in Hermanus, a wonderful seaside resort stretched out along Walker Bay on South Africa's sun-kissed south coast. Named for local Dutch teacher Hermanus Pieters who lived here in the early 19th century, "the village", as locals call it, is small but delightfully formed. There are long walks on superb beaches, fine wines to savour and the beauty of nature to contemplate. So breathe it all in and enjoy life at your own pace.
If you've always wanted to get up close and personal with a majestic whale without taking to the ocean, Hermanus has you covered. Most whale watchers agree the resort is the best dry spot for seeing the glorious Southern right whale – which can grow up to 15 metres in length – anywhere in the world. The best time to spot these giants is between July and November. So grab your camera, keep your feet firmly on dry land and prepare to be amazed.
Other than whales, Hermanus is known for one thing: wine. To the hills north of the village, scattered either side of the Hemel-en-Aarde road, you'll find more than a dozen vineyards and wineries to explore along the official "Wine Route". With delicious food, stunning scenery and a rich winemaking history, it's easy to see why "Hemel-en-Aarde" translates to "Heaven and Earth".
If you need a lie down after sampling South African tipples, head for the string of beaches to the east of Hermanus's compact centre. The best stretch has to be Grotto Beach, a blue flag spot with a vast expanse of golden sand and play areas for little ones. Later, join the locals and head to Dutchies beach bar for cocktails overlooking Grotto.
For thrill seekers who want to take it to another level, sleepy Hermanus has an ace up its sleeve. Head 30 minutes south to Gansbaai, and you'll arrive in one of the world's most densely populated spots - for great white sharks If you're brave enough, book a tour, descend in a cage and prepare to meet one of the world's most feared predators.
If you can drag yourself away from the beach and the whales, head north to Fernkloof Nature Reserve, 18 sq km of lush landscapes dotted with exotic flowers, including the fiery Mimetes cucullatus. Serious hikers can choose between one of four trails. For a full day, go for the Adder Ladder route, and drink in the glorious views of Hermanus and Walker Bay below as your reward.
