Vacations to Johannesburg, South Africa

Get stuck into South Africa’s largest and most visited city. Johannesburg, commonly known as Jo'burg or Jozi was known as the "city of gold". People flocked to the city as riches were found, and it took on a whole new dimension. Today, it’s a cosmopolitan city that’s full of energy and opportunity.

The former home of Nelson Mandela has a rich and occasionally troubled history. But it's this history that fills visitors with intrigue and fascination. The Apartheid Museum walks you through the trauma of apartheid and offers an intense and emotional insight into difficult times. Other museums worth a visit include the The Hector Pieterson Museum and Wits Art Museum. And then there’s the famous Constitution Hill which tells the story of a turbulent past.

It’s easy to get caught up in the dark history, but this city has a brighter, vibrant side too. You’ll witness breathtaking sunsets from rooftops and parks, and in October and November, purple jacaranda blooms blanket the city in color. Johannesburg is also home to the largest human-planted forest in the world and boasts 10,000 trees, so amongst the urban jungle you’ll find some refreshing greenery.

As with most major cities, there are parts you should give a miss and areas worth uncovering. Just don’t go around flaunting expensive belongings and keep your wits about you. This is a destination that’s ideal for those with a sense of adventure, who are willing to delve a little deeper to find the true heart of the city. Jo’burg has been through a transformation of late, with promising regeneration projects and up and coming neighborhoods.

Take Maboneng for example, dubbed the coolest neighborhood in the city by Vogue, it’s teeming with hip cafes and bars, unique restaurants and a blooming artsy, creative scene. Make your way to Jeppestown or Newtown where you can find the most trendy commissioned graffiti.

Or stop off at the theatre to catch a show at The Market Theatre or Soweto Theatre which is situated near the Jabulani Mall. Art fans will be taken aback by the impressive Spaza Art Gallery.

And if you need to escape the busy fast paced city, spend some time in the Jo’burg Botanical Garden.

I adore Africa and have lived and worked in South Africa as well as travelling across the wider region. Spotting a leopard during a night safari at Nambiti Private Game Reserve is definitely an experience I'll remember forever.
