Vacations to Paternoster, South Africa

If the charms of a laidback fishing village make your ideal getaway destination, Paternoster is not to be missed. Once a sleepy fishing village, this serene destination still captivates with its pristine sandy beach, whitewashed fisherman’s cottages and seemingly endless blue skies. In recent years, many locals from Cape Town have caught onto this gorgeous little spot on the South African coast, giving the area a new buzz. But essentially, you’ll still find that Paternoster is as true to its roots as can be.

For those looking to spend time on the perfect coastline, the town’s beach won’t disappoint. Still with a largely deserted feel, the pristine sand is peppered with brightly painted wooden fishing boats, while chilly, crystal clear blue waters lap the shore. Taking a trip out on the water in a kayak is another way to soak up the town’s peaceful atmosphere, and it’ll give you a chance to spot dolphins, seals and even whales at the right time of the year. Or you can take a stroll along the picturesque coastline.

To mix things up, a visit to the local Stone Fish Studio will give you the chance to see displays from local artists. In a similar vein, head along to the At Botha Art Gallery to discover the works of South African actor and artist At Botha. Just a couple of kilometers from Paternoster, you’ll find the Columbine Nature Reserve with its curious blue-tinted shoreline and dunes. Complete with little coves and lovely beaches, it will leave you feeling refreshed and captivated.

Finding a place to stay is easy, thanks to a variety of B&Bs, hotels and self-catering cottages. Depending on what you’re after, you can make your experience as authentic as you like, and that goes for the cuisine too. Although you won’t find hundreds of eateries, you will get the chance to sample locally caught and prepared seafood as well as African specialties.

If you are staying in the area do not forget to visit the open-air restaurant Muisbosskerm - voted one of the "Top ten sea views to dine for" by National Geographic. During the 2-3 hour buffet meal you will be treated to the most sought after seafood dishes. A truly unique experience!

Let's talk
After my first safari at 12 years old, I haven’t stopped going back to Africa, and love South Africa for its incredible cities, world class food and wine, and of course the wildlife. My favourite memory is tracking elephants through the bush in Phinda Game Reserve. Despite their size, they’re so good at hiding!
