Road trip South Africa.
Vacations to Route 62, South Africa
Inland from the Garden Route but by no means less scenic, South Africa’s iconic Route 62 meanders through winelands, dramatic mountains and some of the most breathtaking landscapes on the continent. Starting in stunning Cape Town, the route winds through rocky summits, vineyards and game reserves, concluding at Port Elizabeth. This long yet worthwhile drive is dotted with bucket-list experiences and once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunities.
Cape Town is a colorful tourist resort, overflowing with good seafood and sushi restaurants, waterfront bars and quirky boutiques selling locally produced fare. A short drive inland and you'll reach Paarl, a beautiful patchwork of wine estates that feels seemingly untouched by civilization, let alone tourism. Set amid rocky mountain ranges and trickled with wild waterways, neat vine rows and pretty orchards, Paarl could have easily been reimagined from a watercolor painting.
As you drive through the Langeberg Mountain Range, you’ll head out to the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in the semi-desert area of Little Karoo. Sanbona is a Big Five conservation area, meaning the five most sought-after animals in South Africa –lions, leopards, rhinoceroses, elephants and buffalo – all live on this land and can be spotted on one of its famous game drives. And if viewing big game in their natural habitat is not a rare enough experience, the indigenous white lions that roam the park give a gentle nod to the remarkable conservation efforts that allow this rare species to laze openly in the African sunshine.
As you continue heading east, Oudtshoorn roughly marks the halfway point on the route, and is home to a fascinating network of 20-million-year-old chambers, known as the Cango Caves. You’ll be captivated by the Jurassic limestone that seemingly drips from the ceiling and is now frozen in time in artistic fashion.
Heading towards Port Elizabeth you’ll be spoiled for choice with the boutique vineyards, private game reserves and nature parks that make an idyllic spot to unwind, refresh and embrace the Eastern Cape.
As you approach the end of the route, you'll be greeted by buoyant colorful vessels dotted about the bay. In contrast to the rural tapestry of Route 62, Port Elizabeth offers dozens of contemporary restaurants serving international cuisine, and cosmopolitan oceanfront bars that are ideal for sundowner cocktails.
Whether you prefer sipping crisp whites surrounded by hectares of vast vineyards, spotting indigenous animals in their natural habitats or basking in the sunshine of a classic port town, South Africa’s Route 62 is a diverse adventure that's not to be missed.
