Vacations to Tarangire National Park, Tanzania
Tarangire National Park is named after the shallow meandering river that crosses the park, providing fresh water for huge concentrations of wild animals during the dry season. It is a stunning natural theatre where thousands of elephants, wildebeest and zebras gather every year amid the granite rocks, savannah plains and vast swamps, providing an awesome spectacle. Giraffe, impala and olive baboons also live here – along with some fearsome predators including lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog. If you’re really lucky you might get to see a dwarf mongoose, an oryx or a gerenuk, but viewings of these special animals are very rare.
The real draw of Tarangire National Park is that it gets relatively few visitors – so you can enjoy a genuine sense of remote isolation, untroubled by the crowds of other parks. It’s the quiet gem of Tanzania’s safari circuit. Choose between some very attractive accommodation options, with lodges around the border of the park and some beautifully located camps within the park itself offering the best in bush comfort.
Tours of the park are packed with excitement. Walking safaris are a great way to get right up close and experience the full exhilaration of this African wilderness. Using every single sense and your own primeval instincts, be out there interacting with wild animals – some of whom will regard you as a predator, others as prey. What should you do when a hyena catches sight of you, or an elephant gets a whiff of your scent? Thankfully, your guides know how to keep you safe on this glorious adventure.
Safari drives are the delightful adventure that will allow you to get close to all the action. For a totally different but equally thrilling perspective, why not try a night drive with spotlights looking for the lesser seen nocturnal predators and animals. You’ll see some truly amazing things in Tarangire National Park, whether it’s cheetahs hunting, elephants playing or lions climbing trees.
