Vacations to Kampala, Uganda
Uganda's bustling capital city, Kampala, is in the south of the country close to Lake Victoria. With its tropical climate, breathtaking scenery, array of beautiful parks and gardens, and fascinating cultural attractions, it's a great place to appreciate true Ugandan life.
Kampala started life on seven hills, but has rapidly expanded - so much so, it's been named the thirteenth fastest growing city on the planet. Once under British rule, Uganda gained its independence in the 1960s yet the city's development can be traced to its status at the heart of the Buganda Kingdom, when its rich lands were a designated hunting ground. A number of buildings date from this era, including the Kasubi Tombs, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and royal burial ground, the stately Lubiri Palace, and the Buganda Parliament. For an overview of the country's history, don't miss the Uganda Museum.
A few kilometers away from Kampala is Kabaka's Lake, the largest manmade lake in the country. Excavated to ferry Kabaka Muwanga II to his palace on the shores of Lake Victoria, this tranquil body of water covers five acres and hosts a variety of bird species. It's a lovely spot to spend a leisurely afternoon strolling around the shoreline, admiring the breathtaking scenery as you watch exotic birds soar through the sky.
A visit to Kampala wouldn't be complete without a trip to Owino Market. Mingle with locals as you navigate your way around Uganda’s largest market. This vibrant shopping mecca is home to an abundance of stores brimming with baskets and sacks of exotic fresh fruits from the countryside. Peruse African crafts, vintage clothes, mouthwatering home-cooked food and much more. Before you part with your Ugandan Shilling, haggle like a local to bag yourself an exclusive bargain.
