Vacations to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, Zambia

With its palm tree-laden forest, woodland brimming with bird life and serene grasslands, the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a marvel not to be missed. The park stretches for over 12 kilometers along Zambia’s upper Zambezi river – famous for including the Victoria Falls.

This is one of the best parks in Zambia for a more intimate experience with the animals, and, despite the park’s modest size, there is a huge array of them to watch and spend time with. From impalas to Angolan giraffes, Burchell’s zebra to African elephants, the park is full of some of the world’s most beautiful mammals and birds. And as the animals here are so friendly, there are fantastic opportunities for photos with them throughout the park. This is a place where you can be at ease amongst the wildlife while being on an organised game drive with expert guides.

Of course, the park’s main attraction is the Mosi-oa-Tunya – more commonly known as Victoria Falls. Named by locals as ‘The Smoke Which Thunders’, it’s one of the world’s most spectacular and awe-inspiring sights – and one of its biggest and most powerful waterfalls.

Nearby, opposite the Eastern Cataract, there is a magnificently lush area maintained by the constant spray from the falls. Many of the plants in this section of the forest are unique to the area – a dream for anyone with even the slightest interest in horticulture. And it’s not just plants you’ll find while exploring – you may also come across the little warthogs and antelopes living in the rainforest.

There are many excellent walking tracks through the park and those exploring by foot will be rewarded some of the area’s most beautiful views. As well as taking in gorgeous landscapes, you’ll also be able to spot falcons, eagles and buzzards. You can also get a closer view of the otters who live in the rivers – and you may even spot a Klipspringer.

This park is a luscious piece of paradise and a place that should not be missed on your Zambian adventure. Spend a day exploring the falls, rivers, forests and grasslands and you’ll leave with a lifetime’s worth of unforgettable memories.

I adore Africa and have lived and worked in South Africa as well as travelling across the wider region. Spotting a leopard during a night safari at Nambiti Private Game Reserve is definitely an experience I'll remember forever.
