Day 1: Today begins your exciting three-week Alaska and Yukon adventure! After flying from the UK, you arrive in Anchorage, Alaska's largest city. The remainder of today is yours to settle in and start exploring.
Day 2: During your first full day in Alaska, and as an introduction to Anchorage, you'll join a two-hour city tour which will provide an insight into the history of both Anchorage and Alaska more generally, creating context for the next three weeks.
Denali National Park
Day 3: Collect your hire car from downtown Anchorage and head north on the scenic drive to the Denali National Park entrance.
Day 4: Embark on a full day tour of Denali National Park today. You're likely to see some of the park's wildlife such as caribou, moose and grizzly bears. Your tour includes lunch and a stop at one of the remote lodges at the end of the park road (only accessible by bus or light aircraft).
Day 5: Depart on the second drive of your trip, continuing your journey north, to Fairbanks.
Day 6: Enjoy a free day in Fairbanks. There are a number of cultural or historical sites that you might like to visit (the small museum at the University of Fairbanks is particularly good). Otherwise, if you fancy some R&R, Chena Hot Springs is just over an hour's drive away.
Day 7: Set off from Fairbanks today and head to the small settlement of Tok.
Day 8: Continue east, along the Top of the World Highway, and cross the Canadian border into the Yukon Territory. Today's drive will be slow, but stunningly beautiful, and characterful Dawson City awaits!
Activity & Adventure
Day 9: Spend the first of two days in historic Dawson City. Wander the town with its old Western shopfronts, lingering relics of a by-gone era; and learn about the goldrush, when the population soared to approximately 40,000 inhabitants, all trying to make their fortune.
Day 10: During your second day in Dawson City, you might like to take in some of the incredible scenery at Tombstone Territorial Park, about 90 minutes drive north. The park's interpretive centre is excellent, or you might like to head out on one of the many hiking trails.
Day 11: Set off early as it's a long drive along the Klondike Highway to Whitehorse, the Yukon Territory's capital city today.
Day 12: Whitehorse is most famous for the scenic White Pass & Yukon Railway, and a half-day journey on board is included in your trip.
Day 13: Your drive today takes you north west, heading back to the Alaskan boarder. We recommend breaking your journey in the tiny town of Haines Junction, from which you can access trailheads into the stunning Kluane National Park.
Day 14: Crossing back into Alaska today, you'll break your journey in Tok again.
Wrangell Saint Elias National Park
Activity & Adventure
Day 15: Depart Tok and head south for the small town of Chitina, on the boarder of the incredible Wrangell St Elias National Park. Leave your car in Chitina, as from here you'll join a scenic light aircraft flight to McCarthy, in the centre of the park.
Day 16: As a complete introduction to this incredibly unique area, you'll join a full day guided tour today. The morning sees you donning cramp-ons and enjoying a half-day hike on the Root Glacier, while after lunch you'll partake in a fascinating tour of Kennicott town and the old copper mill building, once the largest free-standing timber buildling in North America.
Day 17: Spend a day to yourself in Wrangell St Elias National Park. We'd recommend enjoying one of the many hiking trails in the area, and be sure to visit neighbouring town McCarthy.
Day 18: This morning you'll depart Wrangell St Elias by light aircraft, transporting you back to your car in Chitina. From here, set off west along the Glenn Highway towards Anchorage. You'll spend this evening at the lovely Knik River Lodge.
Day 19: Your journey today takes you south onto the Kenai Peninsula for the final stop of your trip. Take the scenic Seward Highway to its namesake town, stopping en route for photo, wildlife viewing and hiking opportunities.
Day 20: Take to the water on a full day cruise to the stunning Kenai Fjords National Park. You'll visit a number of tidewater glaciers, and have the opportunity to see an abundance of birdlife as well as marine mammals such as humpbacks, orca, seals, sea lions and sea otters. Keep your camera handy and eyes peeled!
Day 21: Make the most of your final full day at leisure in Alaska, with no better place to spend it than Seward! Visit the Exit Glacier, join a coastal hiking trail, take a dog sleeding tour with an Iditarod champion, or get back on the water in a sea kayak.
Day 22: Depart Seward in good time this morning and head back to Anchorage with plenty of time before your onwards flight, heading back to the UK overnight this evening.
Day 23: Welcome home - we hope you had an incredible Alaskan adventure!
