Sutera Sanctuary Lodges, Kota Kinabalu

Experiential | Very Good | Excellent | Magnificent | Out of this world

  • Cosy heated bedrooms, some with private bathrooms
  • Large shared living areas to meet fellow climbers
  • Wholesome food available at the café and restaurant

Kinabalu Park is at the foot of Mount Kinabalu, 1,500 metres above sea level. It’s an incredible ecological system with botanical gardens, nature and river trails for visitors to explore. It’s also the place where those preparing themselves for the Mount Kinabalu climb gather for their briefing.

There’s a collection of lodges at Kinabalu Park, Sutera Sanctuary Lodges, for overnight stays before climbers start their journeys. The accommodation is basic, but although the lodges aren’t fancy, they’re still cosy and welcoming with cheerful soft furnishings. Thankfully, all of the rooms are heated. Some of the lodges offer two bedrooms with a shared bathroom, although there are single bedroom lodges with private bathrooms too. Most share a pantry and living area so guests can rest up ready for embarking on the Mount Kinabalu ascent.

The Balsam Café and Liwagu Restaurant both offer hot, nutritious food to get climbers ready for their expedition, and they can meet fellow climbers here too.
