Sambor Prei Kuk ruins near Kampong Thom, Cambodia
Vacations to Kampong Thom, Cambodia
If you’re making the five-hour journey by road between Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, the market town of Kampong Thom is a good place to stop. Its unassuming appearance could lead you into thinking it’s simply a handy break point en route to more exciting places, but there’s more to Kampong Thom – particularly if you enjoy exploring Cambodia’s ancient temples.
There are two notable temple sites within a day trip of Kampong Thom. The first, Preah Khan of Kompong Svay, is a vast temple-city complex. The journey to get there is as beautiful as the site itself, so it’s worth carving out some time in your itinerary to enjoy it. The second temple site, Sambor Prei Kuk, is a lovely pre-Angkorian complex set in peaceful woodland.
Take some time to amble the streets and observe local life. Have a leisurely beer in a sala, or, if you’re keen to get as cultured as possible, head to the town’s teeny-tiny museum (it’s literally one room) and take a look at the Angkor statues on display. Just outside of the town, there are a few more attractions that might pique your interest. You could head to Phnom Santuk to marvel at the view from the hilltop pagoda. The walk to the top will also get your blood pumping if a little exercise is in order. A more leisurely option is to hop on a boat and take a gentle cruise along the Sen, past little villages - particularly charming at sunset.
