Vacations to Preah Vihear, Cambodia

The Cambodian province of Preah Vihear is enormous. It’s an untouched part of the country, not often trodden by tourists so if you're looking for somewhere that few people have heard of, this is the place to go. The capital of the province is Tbeng Meanchey, although it’s formally known by its new name Preah Vihear City. There might not be much in the city to hold your interest for long, but it’s a good base if you want to make the journey to Prasat Preah Vihear, or the notable temples of Koh Ker and Preah Khan.

The true highlight of the region is cast up in the Dangrek Mountains – the incredible Prasat Preah Vihear. This Angkorian monument is an 800-meter-long temple perched high on a cliff, affording it the most the astonishing views of lowland Cambodia below. It’s a long journey to get here that’s perilously steep in places, but it’s one that you won’t regret. Ownership of the monument is disputed between Cambodia and Thailand in a clash that’s lasted centuries and has continued right up until recent years so don’t be surprised to see security around the access route and the temple itself.

Elsewhere in the province, the Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary is a gigantic, one-million-acre jungle and wildlife conservation project. It stretches across three provinces, including Preah Vihear. The aim of the sanctuary is to protect and rehabilitate diminishing jungle habitat and wildlife, as well as employing the local community. In partnership with the Save Elephant Foundation, visitors can take part in an eco-volunteer program, staying on the sanctuary to assist with gardening, fence-building, tree planting and fruit cutting for the elephants.
