- Sriking location against the backdrop of the Mingsha Sand Dunes
- Perfect proximity to Dunhuang town and other attractions such as historical Mogao Grottoes
Absorb the history that the Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel exudes. This impressive hotel sits three kilometres from Dunhuang, once a prosperous hub of trade along the Silk Road. With 2000 years of history, the town has become a hub for history, with relics and ancient artefacts pulling in visitors’ attention.
Dunhuang sits in a remarkable locale respective to the Gobi Desert’s Mingsha Sand Dunes, but also offers excellent proximity to other Gansu scenic spots, such as the Mogao Grottoes, which are a thirty-minute drive away. Also known as Caves of a Thousand Buddhas, the Mogao Grottoes are one of the richest treasure troves of Buddhist history in the world, with manuscripts, wall paintings, statues, sculptures and murals as well as artworks and architectural designs. 492 caves make up the Mogao Grottoes, which were recognised as a UNESCO site in 1987.
'Mingsha' in Chinese refers to the ear-splitting sound of the rumbling sands when the wind sweeps over their 40 kilometres’ length, east to west. Stretching 20 kilometres north to south, the sands truly are spectacular. The dunes truly are a natural wonder, and can be seen directly from the hotel. If you want to get up close and personal with the sands, the hotel can arrange many sandy activities such as sand surfing, or camel trekking.
Feng Yi Ting is the onsite restaurant where you can tuck into local dishes. Bedecked in classical style Chinese red hanging lanterns, Feng Yi Ting offers Sichuan and Cantonese cuisine. For more international and pan-Asian options, trial Feng Shi Ting, serving up modern international options.
And if you only fancy something light, head for Zhai Xing Ge, a rooftop café serving up excellent views alongside Western café-style bites. Set atop the Silk Road Dunhuang Hotel’s Main Tower, you can experience sublime sunsets and the romance of a star-strewn sky. For a simple drink, head to the elegant surroundings of Lobby Lounge in the hotel lobby.
People travel from near and far to see the wonders of the Mingsha sand dunes, and you can see them from the comfort of your own hotel – and one with real personality, style and charm.
