Views over The Great Wall of China
Vacations to The Great Wall of China
It’s impossible to appreciate the sheer scale of the world’s most captivating wall until you stand before it and witness its phenomenal scale in person. Estimated to reach 21,196 kilometers in length, it’s understandable how this UNESCO World Heritage Site, officially listed as one of the ‘New Seven Wonder of the World’, was once believed to be viewable from space with the naked eye – it’s actually a little surprising that it’s not.
The history of the Great Wall spans back more than 2,300 years, to between 770-221 BC, when a Qi State duke ordered its construction to protect invasion from other states. A further four dynasties; Qin, Han, Ming and Qin, ruled until modern times; each of them bringing their own influence to China’s majestic wall. The majority of the Great Wall as it is seen today was constructed or restored during the Ming Dynasty (1369 - 1644) but when the Qing Dynasty succeeded them, further construction was forbidden and the wall remained largely untouched until reconstruction and protection began again in 1957.
Thousands of years of blood, sweat and tears went into its construction and yet, despite the estimated 70,000 visitors it receives each day, this tremendous wall today evokes a surprising sense of calm – particularly when avoiding the closer, better known spots of Badaling and Mutianyu and venturing instead to the quieter sections around Jinshanling, Simatai, Huangyaguan and Huanghuacheng.
Full day trips and overnight stays offer the chance to see the lesser-visited parts of the wall, and multi-day hikes reveal undulating curves and panoramic hillside views that rival any postcard. A section of Simatai’s Great Wall glows in the evening between the fifth and sixth watchtowers, where a lit, well-paved pathway takes you up to the wall and rewards you with spectacular views of the illuminated Gubei Water Town at the bottom of mountains. Overnight tours present a rewarding, almost spiritual, opportunity to view the sun rising or setting over these famed ancient bricks.
