Hike Tiger Leaping Gorge

Tiger Leaping Gorge offers one of the best and most scenic hikes in China, which is saying something considering how enormous this country is. The two-day hike is the best option to really get to know this geological marvel. The route is challenging but accessible. You don’t need to be an expert hiker as you’ll mostly follow a sturdy path, but you’ll need a decent pair of shoes and an average level of fitness for this experience.

You’ll depart from the town of Lijiang and be on the road for a couple of hours until you reach Qiaotou, where the trek begins. You’ll follow the High Trail along this 16 kilometer canyon that was formed by the Jinsha River. It’s an incredibly deep gorge, one of the deepest in the world in fact, and has cracking views over to the beautiful Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. This region is characterized by steep mountain sides and tight ravines – getting the name Tiger Leaping Gorge from the narrowest point of the gorge where legend says that a tiger leapt from one side to the other.

At the end of your first day you’ll stop at a guesthouse for an overnight stay. Chances are you’ll be distracted from the simplicity of the guesthouse by the sensational views that five-star hotels would clamor for.  The hike continues on day two but finishes around lunchtime where you’ll be transferred to Zhongdian.

Highlights

  • The chance to see one of China’s most beautiful natural spectacles

  • Stay in a guesthouse along the hiking trail

I became fluent in Mandarin during my time living, studying and working in China. From there I travelled to every corner of China and explored Japan and Taiwan. Beijing is my favourite city, I love finding amazing places to eat and trying new dishes.
