Vacations to Ishigaki, Japan
Located in the farthest southern reaches of the Japanese archipelago in Okinawa province, Ishigaki is Japan’s answer to the typical island paradise. Featuring the white sand and turquoise water which you would expect from a paradisiacal retreat, paired with typically Japanese flourishes, this is certainly a more off-the-beaten-track coastal retreat.
With some of the country’s clearest water and fringed by coral reefs, snorkeling or scuba diving are both undoubtedly high up on any visitors’ to do list. There’s a rainbow of tropical fish to look out for, including the cute and iconic Anemone Fish, or Nemo. If you’re lucky you might spot a turtle or a manta ray! May to November is the best time to go, and this is when you’ll see more rays off Manta Point.
Ishigaki also boasts some of the clearest skies in Southeast Asia, making it perfect for star gazing. Nothing special needed – just a clear night away from any lights! If you’re really interested, you can book a local star guide who will take you on a journey through the visible constellations.
There are several, smaller islands surrounding Ishigaki Island, including Taketomi and Kohama; each offering a Japanese version of the Maldives and the perfect place to relax, go sea kayaking or paddle boarding. Take a Segway tour or even hop on an ox cart and go for a ride along the beach!
