Deep in the Laos countryside is the tiny town of Muang La, by the Nam Pak River. You get there by heading north from Oudomxay. Around it, there are traditional Khmu villages and miles and miles of lush scenery. You’ll get a sense of being in the wilderness in Muang La. It’s a much lesser-explored area of Laos but one that’s supremely beautiful and bound to attract more attention in years to come, so visit now while it still retains its unknown status to the wider tourist community.
The natural hot springs are blissful for achy muscles and are free to visit. Don’t expect the tempo to pick up once you’ve finished languishing in bubbly water – the appeal of Muang La is in its simplicity. Prepare to be content with slow strolls and lazy dinners with fish caught and cooked by locals. You should make time to see the Pra Singkham Buddha, one of northern Laos’ most revered Buddha statues.
The rural terrain can be explored by trekking or cycling, although a 4x4 jeep safari is a good option for those less exercise-inclined. Otherwise, just find a quiet spot to drink in the simply sublime views that feels so far removed from the modern world.
