Vacations to The Great Barrier Reef, Australia

It is one of the seven wonders of the natural world and offers some of the best snorkeling and diving opportunities around, so it’s not surprising that The Great Barrier Reef is at the top of anyone’s list when visiting Australia. This impressive coral reef is the world’s largest, as well as the only living thing on earth that is visible from space.

The marine park surrounding the Great Barrier Reef covers over 3,000 km and is found on the north-east coast of Australia. Many who come to the Great Barrier Reef will arrive into Cairns before heading to the town of Airlie Beach, where many excursions depart from.

Our recommendation when in Airlie Beach (and the ultimate way to get up close to the Great Barrier Reef) is to head out on a sailing trip around the Whitsunday Islands. Admiring Whitehaven Beach and the 74 idyllic islands, these sailing trips are the ultimate way to relax whilst taking in the incredible scenery around you.

If, however, you want to see the Great Barrier Reef from a unique perspective, then how about flying in a seaplane over the iconic Heart Reef? This experience will allow you to admire the vibrant waters and appreciate the scale of the reef, as well as catching a glimpse at the naturally-formed heart shape from above.

The diverse marine life combined with the vivid colors of the coral make this an incredible ecosystem, and those who are avid divers and snorkelers will enjoy the opportunity to see a living coral reef that is home to a huge variety of unusual fish. One of the best places to dive is the Agincourt Reef, which is a jewel-like ribbon reef on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef and has 16 different dive sites to explore. The uninhabited Frankland Islands also offer incredible snorkeling opportunities, where you can swim straight from the beach and find turtles, tropical fish and (if the season is right) manta rays.

Not only one of the best diving and snorkeling sites in the world, but it is also a breeding area for humpback whales which are migrating from the Antarctic, as well as being home to endangered species such as the Sea Cow and Large Green Sea Turtle.

  • Dive on The Great Barrier Reef to get up close to the immense marine life

  • Fly in a seaplane over the romantic Heart Reef

  • Snorkel with turtles on the uninhabited Frankland Islands

  • Sail through the Whitsunday Islands and admire the reef from a catamaran
