Vacations to Auckland, New Zealand

Auckland is a cosmopolitan and laid-back city on New Zealand’s North Island. It steals the hearts of those that visit, partly thanks to its dazzling waterfront location. Much of Auckland’s hustle and bustle is found around the two harbors and its busy waterfront. The staggering number of yachts (in the region of 70,000) has earned the city the nickname ‘City of Sails’. Charter one of these beauties for a tour of one of the islands around the coast or take a water taxi and get to the know the Auckland coastline a little better.

Back in town, most people want to dedicate a few days in Auckland, and it’s certainly deserving of your time. First-timers often start their visit with a trip to the observation deck of the SkyTower, the tallest free-standing structure in the southern hemisphere. It pierces out of Auckland’s impressive cityscape like a needle and rewards visitors with the best views and the chance to get familiar with the city’s layout. There’s a glass perimeter around the edge if you’re feeling brave, or even a SkyJump if launching yourself over the side sounds like your kind of thrill.

Speaking of thrills, another city icon is the Auckland Harbour Bridge, where adrenaline junkies can be found leaping off the edge in daring bungee jumps. Auckland’s not all high-octane adventure though, in fact, it’s mostly a pretty chilled out sort of place. Those looking for a gentler introduction to the city can enjoy Auckland’s wonderful green spaces like the Eden Garden, or explore the Parnell neighborhood with its Rose Gardens, sophisticated shopping and galleries and a French-style farmer’s market. Catch harbor views from the Auckland Domain, the city’s oldest park and where the excellent Auckland Museum is found.

Visiting a marae is an Auckland must-do. These complexes of carved building and grounds each belong to particular Maori tribe and are their sacred meeting places. They’re dotted all over the city. You might catch a Maori War Dance when you visit a marae, or at the excellent Auckland War Memorial Museum when Maori groups often perform.

Auckland has excellent restaurants (serving those delicious New Zealand wines, of course), so spend some time relaxing over a long, leisurely lunch. Or, if you’re in the mood for retail therapy, head to Queen Street for the biggest selection of shops. Come evening, Ponsonby Central is one of Auckland's busiest restaurant-cafe-bar strips and boasts excellent foodie credentials.

Having worked in tailor-made travel for a number of years in the UK, I am now based in Auckland, New Zealand. Weekends are spent scoping out the best restaurants and hidden corners of the city or planning the next long weekend away; this usually revolves around good food, a winery and a hike of some description.
