Kick off your family adventure to New Zealand in Auckland, where you’ll relax, play on Waiheke Island and see the world’s largest stingray at Kelly Tarlton's Sea Life Aquarium. Leave the city behind and head off on a road trip to Rotorua, stopping at the movie set of the Lord of the Rings along the way. In Rotorua you'll meet local farmers, hike through Whakarewarewa Forest and visit the hot springs and mud pools of Kuirau Park. The last leg of your journey is in Queenstown, where you'll ride an iconic steamship and enjoy a scenic flight over the incredible Milford Sound.

Are you ready for a fun-filled family adventure in New Zealand? You’ll land in Auckland where you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel to relax and refresh after your flight. You're staying in the heart of the city, in the SkyCity Hotel - right underneath the Sky Tower! We'll reserve a premium suite so there's plenty of room for all of you to relax. If you feel up for a stroll, take a wander down to the nearby Viaduct Harbour where you can watch the boats coming and going as you enjoy a drink or a bite to eat. The following day is yours to spend together as you please. Ease into your new time zone with a relaxing day at the beach. Mission Bay is gorgeous and has lots of cafes, restaurants and even a play area nearby.
For more exploring, ferry across to Waiheke Island and spend the afternoon at Wild on Waiheke which has something for everyone. Grownups will love the wine tasting; older kids will love the huge array of activities and little ones will have a blast at the play center. The next day it’s time to learn more about the country’s epic marine life. Head to Kelly Tarlton's Sea Life Aquarium where the whole family can meet resident penguins, spot sharks and see the world’s biggest stingray.
Bid farewell to the city – today it’s time for a family road trip! Collect your hire car and then head south, through the picturesque farmlands towards Rotorua. Along the way, you’ll make a stop at Hobbiton, the famous movie set for the Lord of the Rings film franchise. Middle-earth fans of all ages will delight! The next day you’ll meet some local farmers and watch as they do a live sheep shearing demonstration. There’s also a chance to feed the lambs, calves, emu, alpaca and pigs. In the afternoon you can all head to the Skyline Gondola for some excellent views across Lake Rotorua. At the top kids will love the luge ride, Skyswing and Skyvue 4D Motion theater and parents might relish the chance for a spot of wine tasting at The Cableway Restaurant and Bar.
Your base in Rotorua will be a two bedroom apartment at the Regent of Rotorua. The hotel has a fantastic downtown location and an outdoor pool to splash about in.
The next day head to Whakarewarewa Forest, where you will have the opportunity to walk amongst giant trees. Many of the trails here are nice and smooth thanks to the boardwalks making it a pushchair friendly activity. If you’ve got little ones, pick up a Junior Explorer pack from the Visitor Centre and watch your kids learn about the forest as you explore. The wilderness theme continues, with a trip to Kuirau Park to see some of Rotorua’s most famous natural attractions: the hot springs and mud pools! You can also make use of the BBQs, picnic tables and playground too.
The rest of your time in Rotorua is yours to spend as you please. Keep kids and adults alike busy at aMAZEme, which is home to a super fun hedge maze as well as stilts, huge board games and volleyball. You might also like to take a trip out to Hamurana Springs - the deepest spring in the North Island. There is a lovely scenic and short walk and the waters here are shallow and perfect for those new to springs.
Activity and Adventure
After driving back to Auckland and dropping off the hire car, it’s time to board a two-hour flight to Queenstown. Here you’ll pick up your next car and make your way to your next accommodation, the Rees Hotel. You'll stay in a two bedroom apartment with a dining area and a kitchenette, giving you flexibility over meal arrangements. Spend the first evening relaxing, as there is plenty of upcoming adventure to be had! The next day you’ll board the TSS Earnslaw, an iconic steamship that has been traversing Lake Wakatipu for over a century. The views are excellent and you’ll also have a chance to take a look at the engine room as you make your way towards the Walter Peak High Country Farm. At the farm, you can catch a sheep shearing and a sheep dog demonstration before enjoying a delicious barbeque lunch.
The next morning it’s time to gather the troops for a trip up the gondola for unforgettable views across The Remarkable mountain range and Lake Wakatipu below. At the top you might enjoy a nature walk, a luge ride or lunch with a view. In the afternoon take a leisurely stroll along the waterfront and through the charming Queenstown Gardens.
The following day enjoy a scenic flight over Milford Sound from a unique perspective. Together you’ll fly high above the rugged background of Central Otago, before heading west where the glacial rivers empty themselves into Lake Wakatipu. The next day you’ll further explore the lake, as you drive past its shores towards the small settlement of Glenorchy. Stop at this quaint wilderness town for a spot of lunch and a stroll along a walking track. Return to Queenstown for a final night before heading back home tomorrow.
