Vacations to Juneau, Alaska

Juneau is Alaska’s state capital and sits proudly at the base of the imposing Mount Roberts. Despite being on the mainland, you can’t reach Juneau by road (half the city’s population rejected a proposal for a road here), so visitors have to arrive by boat or seaplane. The city’s enviable position on Alaska’s Inside Passage has made it a major cruise port, with ships large and small coming and going.

Adventures in Juneau center around the impressive natural assets on its doorstep. Climb aboard the tram that transports sightseers halfway up Mount Roberts to follow the hiking trails and catch views of the Gastineau Channel. Other world-class hiking opportunities are found just minutes out of town, with opportunities to discover the massive Mendenhall Glacier on foot. And down on the waterfront, seaplanes swarm around, whisking visitors off to bear spotting sites. Boats taking passengers off for a day’s whale watching are easily found here too.

Although the scenery and wildlife around Juneau is undoubtedly its main attraction, back in town, Juneau’s Last Chance Mining Museum provides a fascinating insight into the former Alaska-Juneau Gold Mining Company and how the discovery of gold in this region put Juneau firmly on the map, exponentially growing its population. There’s a recreated mining tunnel for visitors to experience and the nearby Perseverance Trail guides walkers to mining ruins.

Let's talk
I have been lucky enough to travel the rugged state of Alaska fairly extensively and it really is like nowhere else on earth. The memories of the vast, sparsely populated open spaces, larger than life mountain ranges and incredible, and prominent, wildlife will keep me in awe for a long time to come.
