Holidays to Belize

Belize is a little country on the eastern edge of Central America with the Caribbean Sea lapping its shores. Arguably, it’s an easy introduction to this exciting region as the main language is English (the sheepish monolinguals among us can breathe a sigh of relief). Belize has got its own identity that sets it apart from its Central America counterparts thanks to a culture gleaned from its British heritage but with distinct influences of Kriol, Spanish, Garifuna and of course – the captivating civilisation of the ancient Maya.

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is the second largest barrier reef in the world and draws enthusiastic snorkelers and divers from near and far. It’s a phantasmagoria of coral, tropical fish and turtles for those dabbling in snorkelling, and a world of subaquatic caves and the famous Blue Hole for divers. There are few places in the world with such diverse marine life. Combine days of underwater explorations with relaxed island living on Belize’s cayes of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, spending your time kayaking or windsurfing and basking in hammocks gazing at the mesmerising swirls of sapphire and cobalt water.

Inland, Belize is relatively untouched. The Cayo District and Toledo's Deep South are ripe for Indiana Jones style adventures, dotted with archaeological sites that date back a thousand years to the Maya zenith. Giant steps lead to the tops of tall stone temples for far-reaching vistas over the jungle. You can discover excavated tombs and the sophisticated hieroglyphs within them or descend into the caves to see where the Maya kings performed rituals to their gods. Modern-day jungle adventures await in the form of river kayaking, zip lining and cave tubing.

Belize’s network of national parks and nature sanctuaries offers a safe haven for wildlife. Keen hikers will spot spider monkeys, anteaters, toucans and green iguanas on their rambles through the rainforests.
