Holidays to Guatemala

Guatemala is an impressive and vivacious country in the heart of Central America. Known for its outstanding cultural legacies, diverse nature and pristine scenery, its growing popularity among travellers and holidaymakers shows no signs of abating. And it’s not hard to understand why.

Guatemala is a country for adventure-seekers. Trek through rainforests to spot spider monkeys and exotic parakeets. Visit Lake Atitlán, where you'll have the chance to scale a volcano; the daring might brave paragliding into a volcano crater instead. If you’re up for some serious white-water rafting, you won’t be disappointed with Guatemala’s thundering rapids. There are miles of caves to explore if you like your adventure on the dark and exhilarating side, and zip lines if you prefer a whoosh of air skimming your cheeks instead. But the adventures don’t have to stop there. There’s fantastic scuba diving on the coast. And of course, the Pacific Ocean has surfers spoiled for majestic waves.

It’s not all adrenaline-charged escapades. The western highlands are the birthplace of the ancient Maya people, but their culture is still very much alive here today. If you’re interested in Mayan archaeology, don’t miss Tikal, a towering temple in the Guatemalan jungle. Living Maya culture can be experienced in towns such as Rabinal and sacred sites such as Laguna Chicabal. Stop by the Ixil Triangle and enjoy the hiking opportunities alongside your historic and cultural discoveries. Then, of course, there’s fabled Chichicastenango, affectionately known as Chichi, a town seemingly frozen in time. Twice-weekly there’s a colourful market that disrupts the usual tranquillity of this town where you can buy the wares of Mayan weavers.

The original capital, Antigua, usually trumps Guatemala City for urban explorations. Antigua is where you can spend some time walking the cobbled streets from market to market, admiring the faded beauty of the colonial architecture and the bougainvillea-filled courtyards, taking respite from the sun in shady plazas. Head a little out of town to visit coffee plantations, crisscrossed with nature trails.
